Eight Long years ago there was a once thriving animal testing facility nestled in the rich valley of bereft. The research conducted here mainly focused on medical advancements in the modern world though when the funding grew sparse their desperation led to...darker Tests. Mental warping, Biological warfare, and survival endurance were only few of the many horrible subjects. The money they received for such experimentation for military purposes only stretched so far however and soon wore down to a thin trickle. Their testing subjects, mammals of various species, continually passed from old age and other issues. Since no money was there to fill the empty pens the 'White Coats' turned to capturing wild animals. This led to the use of wolves as test subjects though it was a poor choice indeed.
The wolves performed far better than the men had expected and soon grew intelligent enough to nose open pen latches, door locks, even isolation containers! This proved to be fatal in the end for many of the researches for they underestimated the wild ferocity of a tortured wolf. After some time the funding was cut entirely, leaving the white coats with no choice but to abandoned the facility and it's hostile creatures.
When left to their own devices the Canines quickly grew elated. They were free, free to run as they please and do what they wish. At first this sense of freedom sent them absolutely wild. The wolves, after freeing themselves from the hook latched kennels, tore through the now human-less compound, catching wild hares kept in glass cages and drinking from vats of contaminated water. The affect of such careless behavior would not be seen until the next generation came into this world.
When the patched up pack of wolves did end up raising cubs they soon discovered that some of the unlucky pups had birth defects. Things such as unusual fur coloration, eye coloration, increased brawn, decreased mental stability, and other such issues. This is the generation that now runs the pack.
